چکیده

This paper presents Scribe, a scalable application-level multicast infrastructure. Scribe supports large numbers of groups, with a potentially large number of members per group. Scribe is built on top of Pastry, a generic peer-topeer object location and routing substrate overlayed on the Internet, and leverages Pastry’s reliability, self-organization, and locality properties. Pastry is used to create and manage groups and to build efficient multicast trees for the dissemination of messages to each group. Scribe provides best-effort reliability guarantees, but we outline how an application can extend Scribe to provide stronger reliability. Simulation results, based on a realistic network topology model, show that Scribe scales across a wide range of groups and group sizes. Also, it balances the load on the nodes while achieving acceptable delay and link stress when compared to IP

SCRIBE: The Design of a Large-Scale Event Notification Infrastructure

In this paper we outline the design of Scribe, a reliable large-scale event notification infrastructure, built on top of a peer-to-peer object location and routing infrastructure overlayed on the Internet (Pastry). Scribe provides large-scale distributed applications with a highly flexible group communication protocol. Scribe leverages Pastry [1] and benefits from its robustness, reliability, s...

A Decentralized Approach to Make Application Layer Multicast Systems Dynamics-aware

—Application Layer Multicast (ALM) has emerged as a serious alternative to IP multicast and Content Delivery Networks (CDN). Nonetheless, ALM systems still face some performance issues for applications like live video streaming. These problems mainly occur due to the overlay structure or the user behavior. In this paper, we focus on the later one, which deeply impacts the performance of ALM sys...

An Evaluation of Scalable Application-Level Multicast Built Using Peer-To-Peer Overlay Networks

Peer-to-peer overlay networks such as CAN, Chord, Pastry, and Tapestry can be used to implement Internet-scale application-level multicast. There are two general approaches to accomplishing this: tree building (used by Bayeux and Scribe); and flooding (used by CAN Multicast). This paper presents of an evaluation of these two approaches using CAN and Pastry as the underlying overlay networks. We...

Live Streaming via Application-Level Multicast in Content Delivery Networks

With the increasing popularity of multimedia streaming applications over the Internet, innovative infrastructures and technologies are needed to efficiently distribute the surging amount of multimedia contents. Content delivery networks provide an intermediate layer of infrastructure that helps to deliver the contents from content providers to a large community of geographically distributed use...
